A Better Way to Treat Depression

It should be no secret that the health of the body is intimately connected to the health of the mind, yet many treatments for mental disorders like depression don’t place a serious emphasis on simple lifestyle modifications that could ease symptoms of mental disorders. However, recent research, including a 2015 study looking at the connection between brain inflammation and depression, will hopefully usher in a much-needed change. If antidepressant medications helped everyone who took them (and didn’t come with an array of side effects), looking at alternative treatments would not be so crucial. But many sufferers don’t respond to these medications, and even more have to sacrifice other aspects of their health through the toll side effects can take. Fortunately, some doctors are beginning to use treatments that take into account the connection between physical and mental health, recognizing that simple things like eating better and increasing physical activity along with filling any nutritional gaps with targeted supplements can be beneficial in the fight against depression. Read more…
