There is an old saying that if you experience heartburn during pregnancy, you are having a boy. Although this is an unfounded belief, many women do experience acid reflux during pregnancy, partially due to surging estrogen levels. What happens is that the valve in the esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter, relaxes, resulting in the contents of the stomach reversing and traveling back up the esophagus. This can cause that horrible burning sensation in your chest. Many people reach for over-the-counter antacids at this time, but this is not healthy in the long term. Trying to keep stress hormones on an even keel, especially during pregnancy, can help, along with eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding foods and drinks that trigger heartburn, and getting regular exercise.
